Kuching Day 2 [7/6/2014]

Rise and shine. I woke up to realise that I was finally in Kuching!!! YEAH!!
Read about my Day 1 (which was actually only a short night) here if you haven't.

Started my breakfast by stopping by Choon Hui Cafe, which was one of me and my family's favourite breakfast spots in Kuching. Locals will be very familiar with this place as it is an old school. The good thing about this place is everything here taste good so no worries. Just order everything and the food will be sure to leave a lasting impression and make you hungry for more. However, ample seats and parking spaces are problems you will need to overcome to have a meal here. Good food is worth the trouble right??

Kolok Mee, which is a must eat when you are in Kuching. This is one of the best in town I would say  so remember to give it a try.

Ordered 3 layer tea a.k.a 三色奶茶 and it came out great.

Another plate.

Their popiah!!! This is a must-try if you happen to drop by. RM2.50 and you will get a heavenly feeling when you pop it in your mouth. I love the sufficient amount of peanuts inside which blends well with the mangkuang. Best popiah in Kuching!! We ate like 3 sticks of this.

Laksa. I love how thick the taste of the gravy was. And for a spicy lover like me, I prefer spicy and hot gravy which can bring out the smell of the laksa. This dish was great for me. Squeeze the lime and mix the belacan well with your laksa and it is bound to make you speechless.

Just to mention the kaya and butter toast here is very nice too.

Brought my grandma here with us this time round and nonetheless she loved the food here too. For four of us we had 2 plates of kolok mee, 2 plates of laksa, 3 sticks of popiah and 1 toast. Even we ourselves were amazed at the amount of food our stomachs could take in.

After that, we headed over to City One to shop as the last time we were here, mall 2 was not operating yet. Just walked around and I visited all of the sports shop. I was so fascinated by the Nike free run 5.0. Must get my hands on one! End up, I bought one Nike workout dri-fit top. Hopefully I will be more motivated from now onwards.

Only walked for an hour plus then we began searching for food again.

Cream puffs from Twinkle Pan. I was attracted to the nice pictures on display. Cute stuffs with lots of flavour to choose from. How could I resist? Without any hesitation, I went for the half dozen. I chose green tea, strawberry, chocolate, vanilla and banana flavour. Of course for a green tea/matcha lover like me, the green tea puff was no doubt the best of all.

After that, we stopped by Ding Tea at mall 2 to try out their bubble tea. I still remembered that I used to go head over heels for bubble milk tea. I frequented Wikitea, which is near Sibu bus terminal during my high school years. But thankfully, long gone was my obsession. This was my first bubble milk tea in 2014. Back to the point, the taste of their tea was a little bit different from easy drink, wikitea or blackball. Distinct but was still great.

Around 1pm, my uncle called and we met up at The Spring for lunch @The Spring Food Bazaar. We found them waiting for us at Kluang Coffee.

Orderd this fish bee noon soup at another stall. Very huge portion and I could not even finish it. Fish was fried and did not lose its crispiness although soaked in soup. The soup was different from the usual clear broth. Tasted a little like white curry.Very generous serving.

Also had side dishes like chicken wings and curry puffs as we were still so filled up because of our breakfast. My cousin ordered toasts and eggs because he woke up late and that was his brunch. Haha.

After shopping for a while at The Spring, we purposely made a trip to see the orang utans (murals by the famous Lithuanian Artist by the way). Street arts are a great way to attract tourists. For example, Penang.

We were quite disappointed that there were only 2 of them. If it was like Penang then we could have spent a day searching for street art.

I saw you!

Dinner time approached. YEAH. We decided to pay a visit to THE JUNK, a famous western eatery located in the heart of Kuching City. It is highly advisable to make reservations as it was full when we went there. Lots of foreigners were there having pizzas. LOL Haha.

LONELY PLANET REVIEW

Filled to the brim with antiques, this complex of chic dining rooms (three) and bars (two) – housed in three 1920s shophouses – is a favourite among Malaysian celebs. The Red Room is amply supplied with pillows and provocatively decorated with risque pop art. Pasta and lasagne cost RM24 to RM45, pizzas are RM25 to RM39.

Loved their interior design so much. Every single corner of this restaurant is carefully decorated and gives off a cozy ambience. Very nice place for dinner dates with family and friends. There are a wide range of cocktails available on their menus OMG!! But very pricey though. Sigh. One mojito costs RM30.

Spaghetti Bolognese. Instead of using the normal spaghetti noodles, udon noodles were used. This sets them apart with other spaghettis. However, the dish tasted perfectly well and there was no complaint for this.

My iced tea fruit punch. They added a whopping amount of sunkist oranges and limes inside this drink. Slightly sour for me. More of a juicy feeling and you cannot really taste the tea.

Carbonara. This is highly recommended!!
Served with mushroom and bacon, this plate of carbonara has simply blown us away. The sauce was milky and cheesy enough and the bacon made it even more fragrant. MUST-ORDER!!

They provide extraordinary pizzas too. This is their 4 cheese pizza. Thin crust and topped with mozzarella, cheddar, pamersan and blue cheese, it was simply delicious. The abundance of cheese was not overwhelming at all for me. I loved the cheesiness. Yum!

Lastly, the lamb shank. Lamb was cooked till very tender. Definitely a thumbs up for this dish. The meat falls perfectly with the sauce which complements it.

Although it does not show in my pictures, the portion for each and every dish is very big and food is served in a gigantic plate.

From my instagram.

The lighting was quite dim so pictures did not come out too well.

Definitely a place worth a visit. Enjoy the cozy ambience, beautiful design and amazing food all at The Junk.

Kuching Day 1 [6/6/2014]

Left for Kuching at 3.15pm in the afternoon via bus. Didn't quite anticipate bus rides as I had travelled frequently for the past 2 years by bus to basketball competitions but it turned out better than expected. Thankfully no dizziness whatsoever. *Grin

When I reached Kuching it was about 10pm. At this time of the night, we headed to Petanak Wet Market to have our supper.
Photo from GOOGLE.

Ordered this Kueh Cap. From a very old stall. This tasted more or less like Sibu's Kueh Cap.

We also ordered a few dishes to fill up our grumbling stomach at midnight. HAHA. Food was from Poh Fah Seafood 38.

This was their stir fry pork with salted fish. Pork was crunchy and salted fish was blended in perfectly. Fried with lots of ginger.

Besides, we ordered lady's finger fried with belacan and a fish which looked like cod fish(but isn't).
Sorry no pictures, too hungry at that time. Gobbled down everything in no time.

The special thing about this place is that you can order porridge instead of rice.

After our supper, we headed downstairs to their midnight market. For your information, hawkers start to sell vegetables and poultry from 12 midnight till early morning. Saw butchers hanging their freshly butchered pigs for sell.

KC eats [ Noodle House & Si Zi Wan Cafe ]

Good food are always meant to be shared with everyone. As everyone knows, the 1st and 2nd of Junes are public holidays so my dad isn't working so I suggested that we head out and enjoy our meals.

I saw many good reviews about this cafe on Facebook, we decided to go over to give it a try. When we arrived, there was barely any seats as the cafe itself was quite small. You may face difficulties finding a seat during weekends as it will always be full. But do not worry as you will not have to wait for a very long time for food to be served.

This is the infamous Peanut Butter Toast everyone was talking about. The thick toast was soft and fluffy with peanut butter melted on top. Upon your first bite, you will feel peanut butter oozing in your mouth. Peanut butter is not what I would usually eat because of its dryness but this toast just blew me away. Definitely worth a try. RM1.50 and different flavours such as kaya and butter are available.

This is the pan mee ordered from a stall which also serves laksa. The noodles of this pan mee is
very Q which means chewy. Mix the chilli sauce and the ingredients all together and be prepared to indulge.  The portion is quite big and costs RM4.00. I would say it tasted quite mediocre but the chewy noodles put it in the limelight.

I also had beef noodles, which I forgot to snap a picture so I will just write a review. The beef are cooked to perfection and tasted much like Taiwan's beef noodles. But the portion was slightly small.

When it was lunch time, our original plan was to head over to JackPork which is beside Cafe Cafe but it was not open when we reached there. What a disappointment! Instead, we opted for noodle house.

We ordered the set meal, which was set 5 which comes with the food below for RM50.00. Saves you RM7-8. We upgraded our drinks from iced lemon tea to aloe and ice blended series for only RM0.50.

Green Tea Aloe Vera.

Chocolate Godzilla. OMG! I love anything ice blended/chocolate/comes with float.

Sizzling Chicken Chop with creamy sauce. First time trying this too and for me it was OK only. Nothing special about their creamy sauce.

Sizzling Honey Spare Ribs. This was the first time I tried this dish and it tastes surprisingly good. The serving is big too and there was a huge amount of potato wedges hidden underneath. The ribs was neatly cooked and the honey sauce was so yummy. This is highly recommended.
